My Windows 10 System Garbage Cleanup Tips (without any Software)

Written by:

There are many computer optimization software, such as TuneUp Utilities, Advanced SystemCare, Glary Utilities, etc. These softwares make your system garbage cleaned up thoroughly and are very popular with ordinary users.

In addition to system garbage issues, system security issues are equally important. Therefore, I recommend that you choose a genuine and reliable activation key from Key1024 to enjoy the unprecedented security brought by Windows 10.

However, the indiscriminate software can make your Windows 10 system bloated, and over time, the system becomes unstable. Therefore, I tend to let everything under my own control, manually clean up Windows 7/10 system garbage. Here’s a list of optimizations:

Turn off sleep mode completely

The sleep file hiberfil.sys is a product of the Windows XP era and continues to this day. That is, when the system is temporarily not in use, let it sleep, and then wake up the system quickly when it is used.

However, by the time of Windows Vista and Windows 7, there was a sleep mode. Although the two modes of sleep and hiberfil operate differently, the functions are basically repeated for the user. The difference is that sleep mode is less cumbersome, and the file hiberfil.sys tends to occupy at least 1GB of disk space. So how can we completely turn off the hibernation function and let the hiberfil.sys file disappear completely?

  1. Open the run with Win+R, then type cmd inside
  2. Enter “powercfg -h off” and press enter.
powercfg -h off

Turn off the virtual memory of Windows 7/10

Virtual memory can be thought of as an extension of the physical memory of a computer. When RAM is not enough to perform a task, Windows stores inactive temporary files in virtual memory on the hard disk and then swaps them back to RAM when needed.

  1. Right-click “This PC” and select “Attributes
  2. Click “System Protection” > “Advanced System Settings” > “Advanced“.
  3. Click the “Settings” button of Performance option in the “Advanced” tab.
  4. Go to the “Advanced” tab, and click “Change” button.
  5. Ensure the “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” checkbox is NOT ticked. Select the “Custom Size” option and enter 500. Then click on the “Set” button on the page and finally click “OK“.
  6. When you see the prompt “To make the changes take effect, you need to restart your computer“, it means that your setup is successful.

Why not let the Windows 10 system automatically manage the paging file size? Because paging files are large and small, they may be segregated into pieces by other files. And if you set it to a fixed size (that is, the initial value and the maximum value are the same), the paging file will stay in the same place on the disk, without changing the size and changing the position.

Securely delete Windows System Update Files

The Windows 10 system will become more and more bloated, which is beyond doubt. One of the main reasons for the bloat of the C drive is the installation file after the system is updated. In fact, after the update is successfully installed, those update file installation packages can be deleted without negatively affecting the system. So where are these files?

The location is C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. All files in this folder are downloaded when the Windows 7 or Windows 10 is updated. After the system is updated, all files can be deleted.

Delete extra folders in C drive

Delete all the extra folders in the root directory of the C drive, only keep the following 5, where ProgramData is a hidden folder.

Turn off system backup and restore

Open Control Panel > System and Restore > System. In the System protection > Settings on the left, select the third item “Turn off System Restore“.
